Jeju City Night Tour

If you stay in Jeju City area, you can enjoy something more special places to experience authentic Korean cultures and hidden places which local people enjoy culturally in the night, before leaving from Jeju island or during your tours.  Although you arrive at late afternoon, you can enjoy Jeju in the night for 2~3 hours too.

Most of places are near by local publc bus stops, so you can reach them to get in and off public bus and walk in 5~10 minutes. Also T-money card for public bus is free transferring within one hour half minutes. It means the cost of transportation is around just USD 3~4 for this (Single ride is USD 1).

Let's check out night tour spots together.

1. Dongmun Market
Jeju Dongmun Traditional Market was established after the liberation in 1945. Due to  a big fire that broke out in March 1954, the whole market and the nearby area was reduced to ashes. The market then  moved to its current location and kept the original name. As one of the most popular traditional markets in Jeju, Dongmun has served countless customers, selling diverse items at inexpensive prices.

2. Jungang Underground Market
Located in Jungangro of downtown Jeju, Jungang Underground Shopping Center is a modern underground shopping arcade that recently re-opened after a major renovation. Stretching over Jungangro, Seomunro and Dongmunro, the center has over 280 stores selling clothing, shoes, accessories, glasses, watchers, jewelries, bags, hats, flowers, etc. There are also many amenities such as restaurant, fast food chains, as well as rest lounges scattered across the shopping center. It is the only underground shopping arcade in Jeju Island, and offers a pleasant shopping experience.

3. Kwandukjung
One of the oldest standing architectures on Jeju Island, Gwandeokjeong Pavilion was built by Pastor Sin Suk-Cheong in the thirtieth year of King Sejong's reign (1448) as a training ground. For its historic contribution to strengthening the mind and soul of soldiers ("Gwandeok" literally means an exercise of mind and virtue), Gwangdeokjeong was designated as National Treasure No. 322 in 1963. Today, the pavilion serves as a model of excellence in soldier training.

4. Yongyeon
Yongyeon is where the saltwater and freshwater meet. The legend goes that an envoy was sent to the pond frequently by the Dragon King. The pond is flanked on both sides by eight rock walls that look like folding screens. Also called as Yongyeon Yabeom, the pond is one of the twelve best scenic sites in Yeongju. Yongyeon Yabeom refers to the beautiful sight that is created when the full moon is reflected on the clear waters of the rocky cliffs. Hence, many people come to visit the pond at night for the beautiful night scenery.

5. Yongduam
Situated to the north of Jeju City, Yongduam was created by strong winds and waves over thousands of years. However, there are plenty of other stories of how it came to be. One legend has it that a dragon stealing precious jade from Mt. Halla was shot down by an arrow from the mountain deity. When he fell down on Yongduam, his body immediately sank into the ocean and his head rapidly froze looking at the sky. Another legend has it that a white horse, who dreamed of being a dragon and ascending to the sky, came to be caught by a soldier and froze into the rock.

Okay. It's the basic night tour course. But, you are not tired to coninue Jeju's night, I recommend Jeju City hall area - many restaurants, bars and gaming zone crouwed by Jeju's young people called by "University Avenue" specially in weekend night. It takes just 10 minutes walking from my house.

If you're not familar with the first Jeju night, don't worry about that. If you stay my home, we'll let you know information how to do for you too.

Here, the history of the formation of Jeju Island is shown through geological models and samples of mushrooms and citrus.

Folk exhibition room No. 1 displays materials on the rite of passage from birth to death of the Jeju natives and folk exhibition room No. 2 shows materials that represent the traditional ways of living, including those used by the haenyeo (diving women), and farming and hunting tools. How to climb Mt. Halla

Hallasan is one of Korea's three most sacred mountains, located on the southernmost island of the Korean Peninsula. It rises 1,950m above sea level, making it the tallest mountain in South Korea.

If you're expert to climb, I recommend Mt. Halla for ONE DAY. You can go to peak via two courses i.e. Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa. Most of people choose Seonpanak to go up peak and down to Gwaneumsa. If you have very short time, you can choose Yeongsil course too.

Seongpanak Course: Go to Peak

  • It's the course you can get to the top of Mt.Halla but it's kind of boring. The slope is gentle so even children can climb up easily.

  • From the top, it's possible to come downhill to Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa.

Course Infomation

Seongpanak~ Top(Baeknokdam)
9.6km, one way- Around 4hours needed
Jindalraebat Shelter Entry limited Time : Very important
Summertime 13:00, Wintertime 12:00.
If you get there before the time, you have to depart at least before 9AM from Seongpanak Rest Area.

Bus Service schedule:
06:00 ~ 21:30 15~ 20-minute intervals

Some Tips

  • To the halfway point, Sara Shelter, the slope is gentle so you can feel bored. After that, it's sloped
  • For the last 20minutes, it's so hard to trek.
  • In winter, you must prepare climbing irons(crampons).
(At Seongpanak Rest Area canteen: 5,000KRW)

  • The trail is composed of rocks so you should put on trek shoes or mountain-climbing boots.
  • It is the best course departing from Gwaneumsa and finishing at Seongpanak.

Gwaneumsa Course: Down from Peak

  • The valley is deep and the geographical features of the mountain is magnificent so you can see its true colors. But the course is rather difficult that's because the trail slopes.
  • From the top, you can go downhill to Gwaneumsa or Seongpanak.

Course Infomation

8.7km, one way : Around 4hours needed

  • You can enjoy spectacular sceneries while trekking such as Guringul, Samgakbong, Yongjingak and Wanggwanneung.
  • From Yongjingak to the top, the altitude gap is over 300m that's why it's very hard to trek.

  • Be sure to prepare enough water and snack.
  • It is the best course departing from Gwaneumsa and finishing at Seongpanak.

Yeongsil Course: Short time climbing

  • It is the shortest climbing route. The outstanding scenery of Youngsil Giam Rocks listed itself as one of the ten most bequtiful scenic views of Yeongju. The red leaf of maple trees boasts the most incredible grandeur in October. People can climb up to the shelter of Witsaeoreum situated in the highland 1,700 meters high above the sea level since the Rest-year Sabbatical System had been promulgated in July, 1994. The distance is 3.7 km, taking an hour and thirty minutes for one way trip.

Jeju Olle Trail

Jeju Olle Trail is a long-distance foot path on Jeju Island, an island off the south-west coast of South Korea. The overall route, mostly following the coastline, consists of 21 connected numbered main routes, 5 sub-routes, and a short spur that connects to Jeju International Airport.

The routes have an average length of 16 km and all together total 422 km. The exact length and locations change over time as trails are modified or re-routed.
The routes pass through various landscapes along the way including small villages, beaches, farms, and forests. Many routes encompass some of the island's 368 oreums, which are low parasitic volcanoes and historical sites dating from ancient times through to the modern era.

Since its founding in 2007, it has become a major draw for Jeju Island, which attracts not only visitors from mainland South Korea, but also foreigners who have a taste for hiking. According to a 2008 statistic, over 1.2 million people visited and brought $25 billion in economic benefits to South Korea.

Getting Around Jeju

In Jeju, there are various transportation for tourists. Although Jeju is small island, it takes 2 hours by car from west to east. You can choose your favorite one in as followings:

1. Rental car:
If you’re good at driving, it’s good choice to reduce moving time and enjoy free tour.
But, it’s risky to the first time driving in Korea because there are many rental cars by Korean and bad driving habits by local residences. Especially driver's seat is left, opposite position of Japan, Hongkong, Indonesia and U.K.
Also it’s hard to find rental companies for foreigns. (Majors tend to rent a car to Korean people only.)

2. Rental Tour taxi(cab):
You can rent a kind English-speaking taxi tour driver with 15~20 USD per hour. Jeju was very famous of Korean honeymoon tour in the past. So there are still senior taxi drivers for tour guide per day. Most of tourists choosing this are satisfied in general.

If you enjoy slow tour experience, we can guide bus lines in detail alone your tour path. If you want to use public bus lines, I'll guide to timing and tour stops.

Cycling the entire 182km (113 miles) will take about 3 to 5 days, depending on your skill level. Some shore roads also have bike lanes, but many of them aren’t continuous and are inconvenient.

    Hyeopjae Beach

Hyeopjae Beach  is located on the west side of Hanrim-eup, and is part of Hanrim Park. The beautiful white color of the sand comes from the large amounts of crushed seashells that have been mixed in with the sand. The long seashore stretches for 9 km and has cobalt colored seawater and evergreen forests scattered around the vicinity, making the scenery very beautiful. Just off the beach is Biyangdo Island. The white sandy beach is about 20 meters long, and the water is 1.2 meters deep with no sudden drops. In the evergreen groves, there are plenty of convenient facilities and campgrounds for visitors to use.
Hanrim Park nearby, provides interesting tour sites such as a subtropical arboretum, Hyeopjaegul Cave, and Ssangyonggul Cave. The seashore to the southwest of Hyeopjae Beach connects to another beach called Geumreung Beach, and both beaches combined are also called Hyeopjae Beach. From any beach on Jejudo Island, you can always see Mt. Hallasan. It is a great place for a relaxing family vacation.
